Got myself a white band too
This week I bought myself a white band. Just heard about them recently and I read some very interesting stuff on so-called “development” and the roles of the EMU and the world bank in this matter. The G8 promised debt cancellation. That is, on certain conditions… The western world is willing to help third world countries to build their economies. On certain conditions… These conditions have one thing in common: they require countries to adopt a neoliberal (or neoconservative, which may be a more appropriate word to choose from the American perspective) capitalist system. Somehow this is a bit like the USA forcing ‘democracy’ onto countries, only a bit more subtle. “Adopt our system or we won’t help you”. And that stinks.
Did you know that just over 2% of what you pay for your coffee goes to the Kenyan farmers who have to work bitterly hard just to survive? The goal of the Western world is to give third world countries a fair chance in the global economy. Unless it costs us money. Better luck next time…
